'Cross Up' indoor cyclocross event coming to The Lumberyard

Winter weather got you down? Then perhaps "Cross Up," an indoor cyclocross race being put together by Amanda Sundvor of Backyard Blam, will deliver you from the doldrums.

Cross Up will be tournament style races with two riders going shoulder-to-shoulder in each heat. Racers will ride customized Raleigh Furley singlespeed cyclocross bikes with flat bars, big tires and platform pedals. Amanda and her Backyard Blam crew have devised a course that will include some jumps, rollers, berms and barriers. Whether you like catching air or if you prefer to stay earth-bound, Amanda says the course will be a ton of fun for novice and experienced riders alike.

Or, as Amanda put it, "The course will be manageable for the novice... It won't be too intimidating... But for people that can get rad on their bikes they'll have the opportunity to do so."

As if that wasn't exciting enough, this event will be held at The Lumberyard. The indoor bike park (we shared the full scoop back in November) on NE 82nd Avenue is still a few months from its official opening, but the owners have agreed to host this event.

Those of you who know me, know that I am prone to accidents.... a lot of them. I have had 4 hand surgeries complete with an artificial knuckle put in, two hip surgeries, and a plate and 11 screws in my leg. Also, when my doctor told me I didn't have to see him anymore for the leg, I got hit from behind by a car that day and re broke my leg. This time it was my fault and I crashed my bike, re broke my bad hand and my left arm is in a sling.... and my face looks pretty sweet... and by sweet I mean shitty. 2012 started off kind of rocky, but with my next event coming up I am confident it's going to be a super rad year. Hi five... oh, well maybe not just yet.

He is super humble and he mentioned it while I was cutting up for a collage I was making. I was like, "why the hell didn't you say something before I chopped it up?!" Then I punched him in the ear. I kid... it was the nose.

Today Sean was working on our friend Joe's bike and when he test rode it, he noticed the saddle was squeaky where it interfaced with the rails. He wanted to drop some lube in there, but couldn't find the little straws that connect to the lube bottle so he used a spoke instead.
Wow, Sean is such a handsome dude. I mean, look at that hair. He must comb it a lot.

Sugar Wheel Works

I have heard a lot about Sugar Wheel Works, but had never been in there nor had I met Jude Kirstein, so this weekend I decided to change that. She shares her space with Sweetpea Bicycles and I've got to say, it looks like women own it. I say that because it looks great and has a warm , inviting feel to it. Sorry dudes, it's a well known face that women have greater attention to details.

This is the Brian Palmer Tasting Room where you can try out different wheel so you can decide what wheel would suit you and your bike the best.

It's always nice to meet other women in the bicycle industry because there is not too many of us. When I lived in Chicago a woman in a bike shop was few and far between. Out here in Portland there is a lot more woman, but it's still a pretty male dominated field, which I don't mind. It is nice to talk shop with a fellow lady though. It doesn't happen too often.

Cross Up at the Lumberyard: the beginning

I am really excited..... this morning the boys and I went to go tour The Lumberyard's, Portland's first indoor MTB park, new space. I got together with them a few months ago to plan an indoor supercross event that we would throw there before they opened the doors to the public. There was lull for a few months because they were still deciding on a space. It's official, they have a space and today we got to check it out. 50,000sq ft of awesome.

When we get in there The Lumberyard will be partially built out so we will be using some of the features for the event and some features will be built specifically for Cross Up.

I am not really an early bird, but I think I kind of pulled it together besides the bed head.

This is the basement. It will be a big empty space and we are going to try to get a sweet band for the after party. People are going to be fired up after the event and you know they are going to want to let loose with some jams.

This is Joe Prisel. He is on of the designers of Ray's MTB Park and is now on board with The Lumberyard as their park designer. Being as rad as he is, he is going to help us design our track for the event. With him on our side, we can't lose.

This weekend I missed out on a lot of sweet bike stuff because my dogs and I laid around doing nothing..... and I mean nothing.

Palmer is in the back and Nylund is the one up front. It looks like she's sleeping, but she doesn't have eyes. People always look at her and say "oh, poor lady", but she gets around with no problems. When we went to the Tillamook forest to go Chantrelle mushroom hunting, we were off trail she was off leash and got around much better than Palmer. She is way cooler and more bad ass than I could ever hope to be.

Our partner shop (I like saying it that way because we sound like a gay couple...or a law firm)is Fat Tire Farm and I am the only girl between both of the shops. All the boys over there are like my brothers. I LOVE them. Like, I want to make fun of them and beat them up, but if anyone else does I will kick their ass. With that said, I was especially bummed to hear about our boy, Jimmy, getting t-boned by a state worker on his vacation with his lady. The truck "didn't see him".... although he was in plain sight being the only thing on the road, and turned into him. Snapped his leg and his bike.

He got a rod through his Tib and Fib.

That shit is no joke.... Jimmy, speedy recovery. Hang in there.

I feel Jimmy's pain because after a few months of moving to Portland, I did this climbing. I landed wrong after a problem.

All the boys here at the shop were super good to me while I was healing and I want do be able to do that for my pal, Jimmy. It gets better, bro.

The cold winds are blowing.

This time of year we see a drop off in people out riding your bike. Our repair work starts to slow down here at the shop, we end up doing a lot more organizing, counting and cleaning. That these things are important is with out a doubt, that they are something we would rather not be doing cannot be denied. As a bike mechanic a day that requires a brisk finger nail brushing at closing time is a good day. Do I disagree with the popular swing towards curtailing fall/winter/spring riding? Of course not, I am not immune to the dark disheartening nature of the fall, as such I have created a simple equation that works well in describing the majority of non-summer Portland riding.

Miserable

In this regard the idiom, misery loves company, appears to fail in its generalization, although it can be said that when a frequent rider hangs up his/her helmet for the winter the joy derived from riding is replaced with a miserable flood and then we all have to deal with each other in buses, in the produce aisle, at the coat check. In which case it seems that the idiom does hold up, we have all become miserable and cloistered, unable to be out on our bikes.

Slate came into the shop and dropped off some Rapha gear for a show we were doing some work for and with said gear was a pair of Rapha jeans. I have been wanting some of these jeans since I saw Jeremy Dunn sporting them before they were available to me, the public and I told Slate that. He promptly asked my pant size and told me he had a pair with my name on it at the office. The next day he rolled into the shop in his kit looking like he was faking being pregnant, but it was really my jeans. I thought it was a weird Arnold Schwarzenegger "Nine Months" senario, but it wasn't, it was my jeans. Not only was I so stoked then... the level have not dropped at all since I have worn them and I have worn them a lot. Every time I wear them at least a couple people comment on how good they look where as in any other of my jeans no one has said a word.

CD's Cielo Fender job

The other day Chris DiStefano brought in his Cielo asking for me personally to put fenders on it. Seeing as how we live in Portland it is kind of essential. If he didn't this bike would sit in a garage while it rained for the next 7 months. The only problem is there were no eyelets to mount the fenders to and CD said it was to look clean. No zipties.

Ok, so there are these.... which are great and the name of them are very suggestive so you know I love to use them. My favorite part is telling a customer that I had to charge them for a reacharound.

This is what they look like in action. Since the clearance it tight, I had to chop the fender and install Reacharounds.

No eyelets to attach the struts to? No problem.

Again, I had to chop the front fender and I used a Problem Solver that attaches to the brake caliper and you can thread a 6mm bolt into the back. Super clean.

Here was the tricky part. How was I going to attach the part of the fender to the seat tube or the chain stays without using zipties or bulky clamp? I replaced the pinch bolt on the front derailleur with a longer one, drilled a hole in the fender, and attached the fender to the pinch bolt.

Ready to shred, rain or shine.

Yesterday I was determined to make the day awesome. I got up early and made tofu scrambles with collard greens, the night before I picked up Voodoo Doughnuts to bring into work, I wore my sweet new Rapha jeans, and listened to that Skatt Bros song I have been jammin on all week. Yup, it was going to be great. As I slowly pulled up to the shop I noticed cop cars out front and saw out window from our door sitting against the building next to us. I could see inside that the shop looked is disarray and then it hit me.... we were robbed. It wasn't only us, there were 4 others robbed the same way. The glass from our door was removed without breaking it and they hung out in our shop for quite sometime. That's the part that bothers me the most besides being robbed in the first place. 21st Ave Bicycles is my home away from home, in fact I am probably there more. To think that not only someone broke in, but hung out in there makes my skin crawl.

I hope you get caught, asshole. You suck.

Sam Patterson, Co-Founder of SRAM and inventor of the Grip Shift, came into the shop today to show us the Patterson Metropolis Transmission. It's like the HammerSchmidt for the commuter. I got to ride it and it was pretty sweet.

Right after they left Slate, Jeremy, and the Rapha crew came in after their ride to show us how Rapha hi fives. They also brought this guy:

How was the first race of the my season? I ate it hard on the first lap and flatted on the second.... so..... not so good. What was good was to see all of my friends and everyone having a good time on their bikes. Here are some of Dave's pictures. Back in action. My trip was great! I had a good time, but didn't get to take pictures because my iphone was stolen along with my wallet. I have spent my life overcoming adversity so Danish thieves can't bring me down. I missed you and will do my best to make up for lost time.

Don't worry, I am still alive. I have been having a great time here in Copenhagen. Lots of bike riding and getting lost. The only bad part is last night my wallet and phone were stolen, but sometimes these things happen. This week is the UCI World Championship race, so I'll be watching that a lot. After that I think I am making my way to Belin to hang out and do German stuff. Das ist toll!

I am off like a prom dress. Well, actually it's 1:20am and I am still packing because, hey.... I procrastinate. Got a problem with it? Didn't think so. Well, now that we got that out of the way let's get to the mushy stuff. Even though I won't be able to write every day doesn't mean I am not thinking of you. I will be thinking of you when I am riding my bike on foreign soil. I will think of you when I am visiting the viking ship museum. I will think of you when beautiful women get into fist fights over who gets to buy me a drink. I have brown hair and darker skin making me exotic in that land and since I am not going to be spending money on booze there because it's insanely expensive, I count on these fist fights to get drunk. Wish me luck!

Oh yeah, this last weekend my bud/long time sponsor from Redbull, Armain, gave me VIP passes to MFNW and this weekend I got to see all kinds of music. I was so stoked to see Talkdemonic because, well... they kick ass, but I was blown away by Ty Segall. Uhhhh.... he fecking killed it.
